The 'Bachelor of Planning' is a professional technical course that judiciously trains wards in various aspects of designing, engineering, managing and resolving challenges related to urban human settlements. The Department of Planning offers a 4 year under-graduate programme in planning that is unique in the sub-continent and contextual to modern challenges of urbanisation. The course was envisaged and developed in late 1990s by the Govt. of India to meet the shortage of urban planners in the country.
The 4 year course goes into the techniques and theories related to settlement design starting at the site planning level of a neighbourhood and moving up to the regional city planning context. Understanding relations between built forms and the citizens in cities and rural areas, and their implications on local environment, supporting utilities, transport networks, and physical infrastructure forms the core of the planning course. With an engineering orientation, the graduates emerging as urban planners are equipped with not only tools for rational comprehensive planning but also participatory and societal development.
The initial years of the course focus on the basics of planning learnt through undertaking live planning projects. Students are taken to various parts of the country where they work closely with the local development agency or administration, to prepare or update development plans at various levels, i.e., neighbourhood, sub-city, zonal, city and regional context. The students also are required to undertake theory subjects that touch upon various aspects of human and physical development and which ranges widely , for eg. applied mathematics, computer programming, developmental economics, photogrammtery and Remote Sensing, rural development, utilities and services planning, project planning, operations research, real estate valuation, disaster management, etc. The final year is spent on specialising on a particular planning aspect through the terminal project in fields like transport planning, housing, infrastructure planning, land use zoning, environmental monitoring, etc.
The Bachelor of Planning course adapts to the emerging global trends in the field every year, and students are groomed to work in multi-disciplinary planning teams. For further details about course structure, please see attached file.
